New Term, New Challenges & Holiday Snaps

Well, the school holidays are officially over and come Monday, Small Child and I will be back into our respective routines. I’m looking forward to having more time to work harder than ever before and SC is looking forward to being in year one with her new teacher. Other Half is back to work and has one more month of his notice to serve. His new term and new challenge commences mid-October.

I love the advent of autumn and the feeling of newness again – the promise of fresh starts, crisp mornings and the countdown to Christmas lurking on the horizon. And I’m ready to embrace it all with open arms… encased in some gorgeous Autumn/Winter styles of course.

But for now, seeing as we have been back from Spain for over a week and I haven’t shared any holiday photos, here are a few of my favourites to eek out the summer… for one more weekend at least.

Have a wonderful weekend. xxx

Wardrobe Watch

Maybe she was missing Joshua Jackson or perhaps it was just an off day, but it pains me to say that I don’t like Diane Kruger’s outfit here. I’m not sure if the way she’s leaning makes it look worse but it does nothing for her amazing shape and makes the cut-out flats look plain dowdy. I wonder if her fashion super-powers only work with Pacey by her side?

Rose Bryne looked stunning at a Bafta party in LA wearing a cut-out black and gold shift dress paired with black peep-toe heels and clutch bag. The super sleek hair and subtle red lip scream sheer elegance. Love, love, love.

I’m not sure if Whitney forgot to get dressed on this particular day or maybe she thought it was okay to pop out for some milk in her jammies? She’s young, beautiful and incredibly long of leg but if you take away the bag, shades and sandals, she could easily be mistaken for a sleepwalker in this get up. Still love ya though Whit!

My one and only knock out gal in a gown at the Emmy Awards – Claire Danes in Armani Prive. I was really disappointed with the majority of the dresses and it was only this one that made me go back for a second click. Claire is beautiful and this shimmering dress bathes her in a sparkly glow. Mind you, I think I would glow from within too if I was in Armani Prive!

Happy Friday Lovlies! xxx

Fashion Needs Your Vote!

Today is the last day you can vote for your favourite High Street retailer in the event that kicks off High Street Fashion Week – The Glammys. Every vote cast gives you a chance to win an invite to this exclusive event hosted by Jameela Jamil at The Mayfair Hotel on Monday 6 September… and you get to own the item you nominated.

So show your support for the Fabulous 40′s or any other category for that matter and click here to vote.

Whilst you’re there, take a peek at the events happening all week on Oxford Street and keep a look out for the secret fashion stunt – last year models took over the Central Line and staged a catwalk show. Who knows what will happen this year but it’s bound to be fabulous!

Following my post yesterday about a new coat, bet you can’t guess which one I voted for…

The Caped Crusader Vs The Aviator

It was only a matter of time before I started waxing lyrical about the aviator jacket. Ever since I saw it on the Burberry catwalk for the A/W 2010 (live streaming – clearly I was not there in person.. sob), I have been in love with it. And now everywhere I go I’m haunted by THAT jacket in all it’s shearling glory.

Ignoring the cost and the fact that I’m not sure I am actually willing to sell a kidney just yet, having searched all the high-end online boutiques I can’t find it anywhere. I would imagine there’s a waiting list as long as the Burberry Leather Thigh High Boot for this baby. But despair not, for there are a whole lot of other gorgeous versions to tempt, not least another one from Burberry.

Reiss Andrea Aviator £350

Mint Velvet Shearling Aviator £175,

Burberry Prorsum Cropped Shearling aviator £2,395 (No 2)

Cost and availability aside, there is the other matter of a different A/W 2010 cover-up that I have fallen in love with and if I’m honest, is winning in the Race To Get Into My Wardrobe stakes. The Cape.

Isabella Oliver 365 Cape £219 (No 1)

French Connection Hooded Wool Cape £160 from ASOS,

Stella McCartney Cape £815 at Selfridges

Bird by Juicy Couture wool poncho £320 at Net-A-Porter

For longevity I think the cape is more of an investment classic and therefore better value in the cost per wear argument. So that will be the one going on my Christmas list, although I think I may need to persuade Other Half to order early. If you want your pick of the winter coats, you should have purchased one by now!

And I have found another way to incorporate a bit of shearling into my wardrobe which I’ll share with you later…. once the courier has delivered in the next couple of days!

Dorothy Perkins New Season

I loved these ethereal shots for Dorothy Perkins new Autumn/Winter campaign – beautiful and dreamy…. and they make me want to go and take a look in store…

In the past I haven’t gone in unless I’m after something very specific but I recently found their new look site a pleasure to shop. I love the Looks & Features page that allows you to click on some of the specific shoots and then shop the items within. Those are the sorts of things that inspire me to put my own looks together and then I really can get carried away with the credit card!

Whilst browsing a while ago I bagged these two gorgeous pairs of shoes….

The first pair reminded me of the Lanvin ones that I saw everywhere and pitifully lusted after, albeit they are minus the gold chain… and the hefty price tag. The Nude Platforms I spied on a girl en route to see Sex And The City 2 and so had to accost her to ask where she got them from. And they’re still available – click on over to take a look if you dare!

Leg Wear Without The Legwork At Tightsplease

… Or the one in which I ask Other Half to photograph my behind and knobbly knees.

I’m the first to admit that tights and socks etc are often last on my shopping list and then the cold weather comes in and I find myself reaching for the faithful black opaques. Whilst catching up on my holiday glossies I read that plain opaques may be considered a bit boring this year; I disagree so won’t be ditching mine just yet. However when I was contacted by the lovely Lauren from Tightsplease to see if I’d like to review some of their products, I was open to her suggestion of trying something a little different.

Cue these Addy tights by Red or Dead exclusive to Tights Please – any packaging with the words Glorious Gussets gets my vote for starters! The stripe down the back bought a very of the moment, Dita Von Teese feel to them and is great for leg lengthening; not something I would say no to. I was really impressed with the quality too – they feel velvet soft and have made me realise what I’ve been missing by purchasing cheaper opaques. I’ll be pairing them with chunky heels, skirts & jersey dresses come autumn for a bit of a Mad Men vibe as seen on the catwalk at Prada and Louis Vuitton A/W10.

Emboldened by bit of hosiery experimentation I tried on these Charnos cable knit socks in Mulberry with some boots – I think they’ll also be great under my Hunter wellies. Although I think this is as close as you’ll get me to the Carrie Bradshaw Over The Knee Socks look.

And for this next product, lucky for you there will be no photos of the actual product on in all it’s glory. Ever the advocate of shapewear, I was really keen to give these Spanx Power Panties a whirl. I wanted to see how they compared to an in-store own brand that I’d bought previously.

Taking them out of the packet I was struck by how much softer they are than the other pair I possess and loved the instructions. Step 4 says “Wiggle immediately and dance around your room (this part will ensure not only a better fit, but a better day!)”. You can’t beat underwear with a sense of humour.

Control wise they are superb, actually the comfiest I have tried yet and they got me into my COS horizontal striped dress without necessitating the need for constant breath holding closely followed by instant passing out. Bonus.

Things I learned from the making of this post: It’s worth paying a bit more for your hosiery, don’t be afraid to experiment with leg wear a little, Power Panties rock and ignore the look on your husbands face when you ask him to “photograph you from behind”.

If like me you have just realised that Back To School is less than a week away and are now in frantic uniform checking/last minute buying mode, why not enter my Tightsplease giveaway? To win a selection of kids tights, leave a comment on this post before midnight on Friday 3 September detailing the most embarrassing thing your child has said in public. From some of the mum’s blogs that I read, I’m sure there must a few to choose from!

An independent adjudicator (Other Half) will select a winner to be announced on Monday 6 September. Please remember to include your email address so that I can arrange for Tightsplease to contact you for sizing and address details. Good luck… and for anyone who buys a pair of Spanx Power Panties and does the wiggle dance, I’ll be needing to see the vlog please!

Wardrobe Watch Holiday Catch Up

Being one who hates to miss out on anything, I had to take a quick scan through to see who’s been wearing what whilst I was away. Here’s a condensed version of my favourites…

Narrowly avoiding Andy Pandy syndrome in this black and white stripe jacket and white ruffle shirt combo, Olivia toughens up the whole look with some leather shorts. Which leaves me still waiting for my style hero to put a Louboutin clad foot wrong…..

Not Houlihans but a pair of Vince cargo pants for Leighton Meester; teamed with killer heels, the Mulberry Alexa and a great vest. At this point I should be hating her… but I don’t… I love her…. sigh…

Fashion’s current Darling, Gossip Girl Blake Lively knotted a leather belt over a cobalt blue sundress, wore nude heels and carried a bag that, yes please, I would love to own. Never seen it before, I don’t know who it’s by but the love is instant!

Jen doing what Jen does best in a tweed Dolce & Gabbana minidress with grey suede Gucci peeptoe pumps for an appearance on The Daily Show in New York. Perfection.

Two very different ways to rock shorts but both gorgeous for different reasons.

Rachel Bilson wears her denim cut offs with a white cap sleeve shirt and a pair of beautiful nude strappy sandals that look as if they’re made from suede that’s as soft as butter. Love this LA look.

Yummy Mummy Reece Witherspoon wears her print shorts with a navy top layered over a white T and some flat thong sandals. Very different to Ms Bilson but equally gorgeous nonetheless.

I love Drew Barrymore’s slightly edgy look here; I think it comes from the grey shoes rather than standard black and the grown out roots look to her hair. Apparently many Hollywood celebs are starting to rock this trend – it’s called Ombre. For me it’s called “Good God, I must make a hair appointment double quick!” Anyway, I’m glad to be so on trend…ahem…

The more I see of Karen Gillan, the more I love her. Not least because she is working one of the looks that I tend to live in in winter – opaques, shoe boots and billowing dress. But she’s quirky and I love that hair…stunning. Still won’t make me watch Doctor Who though!

High Street Fashion Week

If you are as obsessed with fashion as I am you’ll no doubt be aware that London Fashion Week will soon be upon us. But have you heard about High Street Fashion Week? Running from the 6th to the 10th September and encompassing London’s own Vogue Fashions Night Out on the 8th, some of London’s best fashion flagship stores on Oxford Street will unite for a fashion week dedicated to the public. Okay I’ll stop dancing for joy now. Or maybe not.

Twenty four of the hottest UK retailers including French Connection, House Of Fraser, Selfridges & John Lewis have signed up to the second year of High Street Fashion Week, kicking off in style at The Mayfair Hotel with a very glam event hosted by T4 presenter and one of the newer fashion IT girls on the block, Jameela Jamil. So glam in fact that these inaugural awards have been named The Glammys. High Street fashion lovers across the country can vote for their favourite retailer in eight categories, one of which is very close to my heart – Fabulous 40s. And er…ahem… the one which yours truly has been asked to be the official blogger for!

Retailers who bring a fantastic selection of savy style choices for us 40 something’s are tapping into a very lucrative market. After all, not only do a lot of woman in this age group have more disposable income to spend than ever before but we we know what we want and what suits, making us some of the most discerning customers. Forty has long since become the new thirty with the advent of such style icons as Sarah Jessica Parker, Elle McPherson, Julianne Moore and Cate Blanchett to name but a few. I don’t know about you but I see these women and I want to shop!

The High Street is finally recognising this and a large number of retailers have upped their game when it comes to luring us into stores to part with our hard earned cash. As I’m sure you can tell, this is a subject very close to my heart and one that I could quite frankly go on about for all eternity. So let me clamber down off my soapbox in these treacherously high heels and show you my Fab Four in the Fabulous 40′s category.

Camel is going to be a huge trend for A/W 2010 so I can’t think of a better way to indulge than with this gorgeous jacket from Next.

Flattering drape? Check. Graphic Print? Check. Versatile enough to go from day to night? Check. I think may have fallen a little in love with this print dress from Debenhams.

The most gorgeous winter cover up from Portfolio at Marks and Spencer – with the sash for party wear and without for day.

Please don’t get me started on capes for A/W 2010 – I am fighting a serious craving already. This one from Wallis is not doing anything to diminish it!

If you like these or any of the other pieces in this category, click here to vote on the official High Street Fashion Week Website – voting for The Glammy’s closes on 3 September. And if you love fashion and happen to be in London in the week of 6 – 10 Sept get on down to Oxford Street where retailers will be treating shoppers to an amazing public fashion show, celebrity hosted champagne receptions, fashion tutorials and exclusive discounts.

I will of course be keeping you up to date with all the goings on – flying the flag (and possibly a great bag) for the Fabulous 40′s!

Versatility

Yet another way to wear the fabulous DKNY Cozy….

DKNY Cozy from my-wardrobe.com

This is one I’ll be trying when the weather cools; No. 4 of twelve ways to wear. You have to love this garment – it’s a total wardrobe must have, as recommended by yours truly, The Online Stylist!

I wore mine on both the outbound and return plane journey and wrapped it around me whilst sitting under the air conditioning this holiday. It now has to be prised off me to go the dry cleaners – apart from that, it’s good to be home!

Marks And Spencer Autumn/Winter 2010

Year upon year, Marks And Spencer hit on some real goodies when they bring out their new seasons looks. As ever, you have to be quick if you want to snaffle the best pieces. Some are out already and have been for a while, but there’s still a chance to lay in wait for others and pounce when they arrive!

I am utterly seduced by rich tones of russet, gold and plum and may be pouncing on a few of these myself very soon…
